Few-Shot Examples
You have learned how to write clear prompts, set a tone, and chain steps together. But there is one technique that outperforms all of them when it comes to getting consistent, on-brand output from ChatGPT: showing it examples. This is called few-shot prompting, and it is the single most effective way to get ChatGPT to match your style, format, and quality standards every time.
What Few-Shot Means
Section titled “What Few-Shot Means”The term comes from machine learning research, but the concept is simple. “Zero-shot” means you give ChatGPT an instruction with no examples. “Few-shot” means you give it the same instruction along with two or three examples of what good output looks like.
Zero-shot: “Write a listing description for a 3BR ranch.” Few-shot: “Write a listing description for a 3BR ranch. Here are two examples of the style I want: [Example 1] [Example 2].”
The difference in output quality is often dramatic. When ChatGPT sees examples, it locks onto the pattern --- the sentence length, the vocabulary, the structure, the level of detail --- and replicates it. Instructions tell ChatGPT what to do. Examples show it how to do it.
Zero-Shot vs. Few-Shot Comparison
Section titled “Zero-Shot vs. Few-Shot Comparison”Let us see this in action with a real estate example. Suppose you want listing descriptions in a very specific style: short sentences, sensory language, no superlatives, and a neighborhood mention at the end.
Zero-Shot Prompt
Section titled “Zero-Shot Prompt”Write a 100-word listing description for a 2BR condo in downtown Portland with city views, a modern kitchen, and in-unit laundry. Use short sentences and sensory language. No superlatives. Mention the neighborhood at the end.
ChatGPT will try to follow these rules, but it may interpret “short sentences” and “sensory language” differently than you intend. The output will be good but inconsistent across multiple runs.
Few-Shot Prompt
Section titled “Few-Shot Prompt”Write a 100-word listing description for a 2BR condo in downtown Portland with city views, a modern kitchen, and in-unit laundry.
Match the style of these examples:
Example 1: “Morning light fills the living room through floor-to-ceiling glass. The kitchen is clean-lined and purposeful --- quartz counters, matte black hardware, a gas range that earns its keep. Two bedrooms sit at opposite ends for privacy. Step onto the balcony and the skyline stretches south to the river. Ladd’s Addition is six blocks away, with its rose gardens and unhurried side streets.”
Example 2: “Hardwood floors run the length of the main level, warm underfoot. The open kitchen invites slow Sunday mornings --- stone countertops, soft-close drawers, room to spread out. A second bedroom doubles as an office with a view of the park below. In-unit laundry means one less errand. Alberta Arts is a ten-minute walk north, with its murals and weekend energy.”
Now ChatGPT has a clear target. It understands that “short sentences” means roughly 8 to 12 words. “Sensory language” means “warm underfoot” and “morning light fills.” “No superlatives” means no “stunning” or “gorgeous.” The examples communicate what pages of instructions could not.
Providing Two to Three Examples
Section titled “Providing Two to Three Examples”Two examples is the sweet spot for most tasks. One example can be interpreted as a fluke. Three examples might be overkill for simple tasks. Two gives ChatGPT enough data to identify the pattern without overloading the prompt.
When choosing examples, pick ones that represent:
- Your preferred structure (do you lead with a feature or set a scene?)
- Your vocabulary range (casual, elevated, technical?)
- Your sentence rhythm (short and punchy, or longer and flowing?)
- Your typical length (100 words? 200? A paragraph?)
If you do not have existing examples to use, write one from scratch --- just one good paragraph in the style you want. Then use that single example as your template. Even one example dramatically improves consistency.
Getting Consistent Formatting
Section titled “Getting Consistent Formatting”Few-shot is not just about writing style. It is also the best way to get consistent formatting. If you want every listing description to follow a specific structure --- lead with location, then interior, then exterior, then neighborhood --- show that structure in your examples.
If you want emails formatted a certain way:
Here is how I format my client emails:
Example: Hi [Name],
Quick update on your listing. [One or two sentences of news.]
Next steps: [Bullet points of action items.]
Let me know if you have questions.
Best, [My name]
Now every email ChatGPT generates will follow that exact format. You do not need to describe the format in words --- the example speaks for itself.
Real Estate Use Cases for Few-Shot
Section titled “Real Estate Use Cases for Few-Shot”Here are the places where few-shot prompting delivers the biggest impact:
Listing Style Matching
Section titled “Listing Style Matching”If your brokerage has a brand voice or you have a writing style that clients recognize, provide two of your best past descriptions as examples. ChatGPT will match the voice for every new listing.
Email Tone Matching
Section titled “Email Tone Matching”Pull two recent client emails you are proud of. Use them as examples for future email generation. ChatGPT will replicate your communication style --- your greeting, your sign-off, your paragraph length, your level of formality.
Social Media Voice
Section titled “Social Media Voice”Grab two or three of your best-performing Instagram captions. Use them as examples. ChatGPT will produce new captions that feel like extensions of your existing feed rather than generic filler.
Market Report Structure
Section titled “Market Report Structure”If you have a monthly market report format your clients love, paste one past report as an example. Next month, just feed new data and ChatGPT reproduces the same format with updated numbers.
Building Your Example Library
Section titled “Building Your Example Library”Over time, collect your best outputs. Save them in a simple document organized by type:
- Best listing descriptions (2-3 examples)
- Best client emails (2-3 examples per phase)
- Best social captions (2-3 per platform)
- Best market summaries (1-2 examples)
When you need to generate new content, grab the relevant examples and paste them into your prompt. This “example library” becomes one of your most valuable AI assets. It ensures that every piece of content ChatGPT produces sounds like you, not like a generic AI.
